Statewide Treaty Bill

This Bill is landmark legislation to give effect to the first Statewide Treaty between First Peoples in Victoria and the State of Victoria. The Bill gives effect to the first Statewide Treaty. It was developed through negotiations with the Victorian State Govenrment.

The Bill, and the first Statewide Treaty that it gives effect to, recognises and restores the inherent rights of First Peoples in Victoria.

This Bill creates a renewed relationship between the State and First Peoples in Victoria. It demonstrates a commitment from the State of Victoria to not repeat past injustices and to address the ongoing consequences of colonisation, and aims to bring about improved and enduring outcomes for First Peoples and a better future that is just, fair and equitable for First Peoples and all Victorians.
