The violent events that took place over the weekend have no place in our society. We know many have been left feeling disturbed and shaken after witnessing an extremist contingent of Neo-Nazis carry out a public display of hatred, racism, xenophobia and violence.
The First Peoples’ Assembly strongly condemns the acts of racism in the city streets of Naarm and the violent attack on Camp Sovereignty yesterday afternoon.
Camp Sovereignty sits on a sacred ceremonial ground and holds the remains of ancestors from across Victoria.
Let that be a reminder that we’re still here, we’re still strong and our sovereignty was never ceded.
The camp represents a collective vision for a better future – it is an open space for peaceful demonstrators, and for all who walk with respect and all who continue to call for truth and justice.
It is important now more than ever to take care of each other, check in with friends, family and community and stay safe.
We are stronger together and will continue to walk with allies and all who continue to champion the rights of First Peoples. Our sovereignty is strong, and our collective vision for a better future remains unchanged.
